May I ask whether this answer reliably describes the background of the Church of Latter-day Saints?

I guess this answer reliably tells the propaganda circulated by enemies of the church. It does not in any way indicate the official history. The witnesses themselves swore that they saw what they claimed to have seen, and denied ever saying otherwise. They all died with that testimony still on their lips.
